OUR ENVIRONMENT
In this section we are going to take a look at our environment.
The environment is everything around us. The street trees, parks,
rivers, buildings and roads, the food we eat, the water we drink
and the air we breathe are all part of our environment.
It is up to all of us to care for the environment, after all, it
is where we all live. Unfortunately many human activities cause
environmental damage. Smoke and fumes in the air, chemicals used
in farming washed into rivers and litter are all examples of how
we cause pollution.
Learn
There are loads of ways to learn about caring for the environment.
Reading books, watching programmes like the news on television and
surfing the net are all excellent ways to learn about local and
global (worldwide) environmental issues.
Act
If you want to start caring for your environment the best thing
to do is to start off small. See if your school has an environmental
or green club or talk to your teacher about starting one. Make sure
you always put your litter in the bin and encourage your friends
and parents not to drop litter either.
You can recycle glass, paper, plastic bottles, food and drink cans
and even compost fruit and vegetable scraps and garden waste.
Turning off the light when you leave the room, not wasting hot
water, switching off the television at the set and putting on a
jumper when you are cold rather than turning up the heating are
all ways to save energy, money and reduce pollution.
See the Litter and Waste and Energy
sections of the web site to learn more about those topics.
In this section we are going to focus on the topics of Pollution
and a study of the River Lagan.
Pollution –
We are going to take a look at three major global environmental
problems, the Greenhouse Effect, Acid Rain and destruction of the
Ozone Layer.
The River Lagan –
Learn about how the river changes as it travels over weirs and under
bridges on it’s way from the source on Slieve Croob to the
mouth at Belfast.
