ENERGY CONSERVATION
We saw how converting energy from one form to another can be harmful
to the environment. That's why it is so important that we use energy
wisely.
Energy conservation means using less energy whenever possible.
We can all practice energy conservation every day - we could turn
off lights when we leave our room for example. Every time we conserve
energy we help to save the environment. (And we help to save mum
and dad's money too).
It is important to try to save energy at home. No matter what we
do, all the heat inside our homes will eventually escape. The trick
is to slow it down as much as possible. Some ways we can do this
are by:
• Closing windows.
• Closing doors inside the
house.
• There are ways to improve
or build houses better so that they keep in the heat for longer.
Much of the heat is lost through the roof, so make sure that there
is adequate insulation in the roof space.

Be careful never to touch this with your bare hands because it
made from tiny pieces of glass. This should only be put down by
a professional.
• Installing double glazing
in a house will greatly reduce the amount of heat loss. The rooms
will be noticeably warmer all the time.

• Putting brushes on the
letter box in the door will stop warm air from getting out and cold
air from getting in. These brushes can be bought in any DIY store.
You can also get thinner brushes to put at the bottom of the door
to stop draughts from coming in under the door.

• Closing the curtains at
night-time helps by stopping the heat from getting to the windows
(heavy curtains down to the floor are best).
