Students
from Silverstream School in Greenisland helped Bryson Charitable Group kick
off a new programme a new pilot education programme. Children from
more than 60 primary schools across the province will be participating
in the scheme, which is designed to raise awareness of the Wake
up to Waste message of "Reduce, Re-use, Recycle". The
pilot is a project of the charity Bryson Charitable Group in cooperation with ARENA Network and is supported
through the Environment and Heritage Service Landfill Tax
Credit Scheme Interim Fund.
Each visit will be tailored to reflect the local authority waste
management strategy to maximize the programme's impact among children
and their families. Bryson Charitable Group has been providing in-school environmental
education programmes for nearly 20 years. During this time, more
than 200,000 children across Northern Ireland have learned about
their role in the environment through a Bryson Education scheme.
The charity also provides the Action Renewables education programme.
"We are proud of our role as a positive force for social change,
including helping raise awareness of the environment," said
Trevor Wright of Bryson Charitable Group . "In particular, our work with
children can help shape the next generation into a more ecologically-sensitive
one than their predecessors," he added. In addition to raising
awareness of the "Three Rs", the programme aims to help
schools implement waste-reduction policies in their practises, with
the goal being to achieve the "Eco Schools" accreditation.
With more than 360 employees and a turnover of £8.3million,
Bryson Charitable Group is one of Northern Ireland's largest charities and
will celebrate its centenary in 2006. With a focus on social policy
development, the charity has pioneered many innovative programmes
