SO WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Well the first line of defence is to not produce the waste in the first place. However, it is impossible to stop producing waste completely, so we must next think of how we can reduce the amount that we produce. In addition, there is the option to reuse some materials. These options are shown below as a 'waste hierarchy' – a sort of pyramid that shows the different ways of dealing with waste. Those at the top of the pyramid are most desirable.

Reduce Reuse Recover (recycle)

At present, most of our rubbish is dealt with at the bottom of the pyramid. It is our responsibility to change habits and attitudes so that we start at the top.

To find out about the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) click on the appropriate part of the pyramid.
